PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
The Wattled Crane Recovery Programme is a member of the IUCN Re-introduction Specialist Group and is branded by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).
Financial support and management is provided by the Johannesburg Zoo in co-operation with the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s South African Crane Working Group, the African Association of Zoos and Aquaria (PAAZAB) and the Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife.
Ten captive management facilities participate in the breeding program.
AIM:
To reverse the trend towards local extinction of the Wattled Crane in South Africa.
OBJECTIVES:
Maintenance of a captive breeding flock to serve as a genetic reservoir in the case of catastrophic extinction of Wattled cranes in the wild.
Supplementation of the wild population through the release of captive-reared fledglings into existing wild populations.
